Thousands of Londoners have injured themselves at stations across the capital, with a one passenger receiving a huge payout.

Almost 14,000 injuries (non-fatal) have been recorded on the Underground, DLR and Elizabeth Line by Transport for London since 2020.

Favourite commuter and tourist stations Waterloo and Kings Cross were among the most injury-prone locations, a Freedom of Information Request has revealed.

Slips, trips and falls were responsible for over 8,000 of the close to 14,000 non-fatal injuries at London stations.

Escalators appear to be the most problematic for passengers, causing over 4,500 injuries.

TfL also had to reckon with over 1,700 stair injuries in the last five years.

47 people also hurt themselves at TfL toilets and 3 even on the roof of Underground stations.

There were over a thousand injuries at the platform/train interface.

It was reported last year that a 101-year-old woman had to be treated for serious injuries when she was dragged along the platform on the Northern line at Archway.

Her jacket became trapped in the doors as she was getting off.

TfL has dished out over £2,500,000 in injury compensation for those worst affected by injuries – the biggest of which was £2,352,872 payout.

Officials have refused to say what the incident was, but in 2023, a boy had his toes torn off when his foot got stuck in an escalator at London Bridge.

The other top compensation payments were £40,000 and £33,000.

Only 369 of the close to 14,00 non-fatal injuries were considered serious and TfL has only made 40 pay outs in the last five years.

Waterloo Station saw more accidents than any other in London’s Tube network.

There were 517 separate incidents there in the past five years.

The vast majority, over 300, fell victim to escalators while at Waterloo, with stairs being the next biggest culprit at 38 injuries.

In their Freedom of Information Request response, Transport for London said they are always working to improve passenger safety on their network, which can see 4 million visits each day.

Case Officer David Wells added: ‘The safety of our staff and customers is our top priority, and safety on TfL’s rail network is comparable to that of mainline UK rail services.

‘We are never complacent, and continuously strive to reduce injuries and ensure our customers travel safely across the network.

‘We have done a lot to understand the key locations, issues and contributory factors which lead to customer accidents, particularly as customers board and alight our trains.

‘To reduce numbers of safety incidents, we focus on both influencing customer behaviour and changing our infrastructure where possible to reduce the risk.

‘The data should be viewed in the wider context of the millions of passenger journeys that are made on the TfL network each day.’
