Two people have been killed and nine others injured after gunfire erupted at a Philadelphia park on the night of Memorial Day.
The shooting broke out shortly before 10.30pm on Monday at Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park.
A man and a woman, Mikhail Bowers, 21, and Amya Devlin, 23, have been identified as the deceased.
The wounded victims ranged in age from 15 to 28 and are in stable condition, said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel on Tuesday morning.
A 15-year-old boy was shot in the thigh, a 16-year-old girl in the thigh and a 16-year-old girl in the leg. In addition, an 18-year-old woman was shot in the foot, a 19-year-old woman in the head, a 19-year-old woman in the hand, a 20-year-old man in the arm, a 23-year-old woman in the nose, and a 28-year-old man in the arm.
The victims were transported to several local hospitals including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Lankenau Medical Center and Temple University Hospital.
No one has been arrested in the incident and authorities have not found any weapons.
The shooting happened as several groups of people were at the park and some were packing up to leave.
Investigators are analyzing shell casings to determine how many shooters were involved and the types of weapons they were using.
‘It’s pretty rapid fire, so we’re pretty confident that there probably was a switch on this gun,’ said Bethel.
‘We can hear multiple rounds from stuff that’s been already posted on social media, the team will dissect that.’
It happened hours after another mass shooting on Memorial Day weekend that happened on a private boat near a dock in Little River, South Carolina. At least 11 people were injured as gunfire broke out on Sunday night.
