“The US Embassy community offers our deepest condolences to those affected by the earthquake in Cebu. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected. We stand ready to support the Philippine government’s response as #FriendsPartnersAllies, monitoring @phivolcs_dost,” she wrote.

Canada echoed the same solidarity. The Embassy of Canada to the Philippines said it was deeply saddened by the tragedy.

“The Embassy of Canada extends its deepest sympathy to the residents of Cebu and other provinces in the Visayas affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake on September 30th. We mourn the loss of lives and we stand with those who are grieving, injured, or displaced. Canada stands ready to coordinate closely with Philippine government agencies, humanitarian partners, and the international community to help meet urgent needs,” it stated.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located off Bogo City, where 27 deaths were confirmed, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

Overall, 61 fatalities have been reported, along with 147 injured individuals.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) initially measured the tremor at magnitude 6.7 before upgrading it to 6.9. The quake caused power outages in several parts of Cebu and inflicted severe damage on centuries-old heritage churches and other structures.

Rescue operations are ongoing as local authorities brace for possible aftershocks. Emergency teams continue to clear debris and assist survivors, while calls for vigilance remain in place.
