80 years ago today – May 8 – the United Kingdom went through one of the most momentous days in its history.

The country marked Victory in Europe after Germany surrendered to the Allies on May 7 after almost six years of brutal war on the continent.

It was a day full of national political events, as well as close-knit community celebrations.
