Like the 2016 original, the story follows the daunting ocean adventure of Moana (Lagaʻaia) and demigod Maui (Johnson).
“Moana” and “Moana 2” broke numerous records, including soundtrack success on the Billboard 200 and international opening weekend numbers for an animated film, respectively.

Johnson and actress Auli’i Cravalho voiced Maui and Moana in the animated films. However, Cravalho opted to join the live-action adaptation as an executive producer to pave the way for other Pacific Islanders.
“I want to be behind the camera as much as I am in front of it,” she told The Wrap. “When I talk about representation, I want to see the same thing happening in writers rooms. I want to see the same thing happening with directors.”
