‘We’re on a pub crawl covering all 3535 venues in London’

A group of students are attempting to do the impossible – visiting every single pub in London. 

Danny, Spike and Nikol cheers with a pint of lager in front of the camera. We are in Greenwich in a pub garden overlooking the Cutty Sark. 

‘17 down, 3518 to go,’ they cheer. 

It is part of their intricate map to visit every single pub in London, and Metro joined the three friends who met at university for a few as they ticked the venues off their list. 

And the best part is, they are just doing this for fun. As nightlife and pub culture takes a down turn in the capital, with iconic venues forced to close in the face of dwindling footfall, this group want to make it clear that young people still yearn for sticky carpets and perfectly poured pints.

Danny, 23, said: ‘Pubs are an important part of British culture. We have gone into a few working men-type venues and the old men can just kind of stare at us.

‘But once we actually get chatting to people they see we are a good bunch.’ 

Their map and plan is intricate. Each of the 3535 pubs connect to each other, and include everything from your high-brow gastro pub to the Wetherspoons sat in all corners of the capital. 

It goes borough-by-borough, and invented by Spike, it can easily be deviated from as long as you stick to the general area.

He said: ‘It starts and ends in Isle of Dogs, which is a bit of a homecoming for us as it’s where we are from.’

When Metro caught up with them, they were tackling east London and chose four pubs overlooking the River Thames. 

Every venue is marked on their atmosphere, price and Guinness pouring ability – and the group hope that one day people will refer to their account to get the best pub reviews. 

But they have a mammoth task ahead of them. They expect they will be done in around 13.5 years if they maintain their current pace. 

‘We have had to tell a few friends they can’t join if they only want to come to a few,’ Spike, a said. ‘If you are going to do it, you need to join us for every single one.’ 

‘We don’t think this will financially destroy us’

Their social pages, which are in the earlier stages of their growth, are already filled with comments cheering them on. 

‘We have had pubs get in contact with us saying they’ll give us a free pint,’ Nikol said.

And any little helps for this group. Unsurprisingly, the biggest hurdle in their quest is finances. 

Not only has the average price of a pint in London has nearly reached £8, but the cost of travel has steadily risen. 

Spike said: ‘Because we are doing this over almost 15 years, we don’t think this will financially destroy us.

What happens when they need to take a trip to Romford, on the border with Essex, or Biggin Hill which is in the depths of Bromley? 

‘We have been putting them off’, Danny, a musician, said. ‘But the plan is, to do all the pubs in those types of areas in one go.’ 

For now, they stick to their weekly outings – aiming for at least five per week – and are slowly making their way round London.

Danny added: ‘We all met at a pub, so it really feels like a nice thing to be doing together and keeps us meeting after work.

‘And we are making more friends as we go.’
