Why all businesses must take note of today’s Uber ruling
After a long-running legal battle, the UK’s Supreme Court today ruled that ride-hailing firm Uber must classify its drivers as workers rather than self-employed.
It means Uber drivers will be entitled to basic employment rights such as the minimum wage (including backpay) and up to 5.6 weeks paid annual leave each year, which they would not be entitled to as self-employed contractors.
