The Prince and Princess of Wales are currently in the throes of deciding where to send their eldest son, Prince George, to secondary school. The 12-year-old is due to switch educational establishments in September 2026, and there are reportedly two choices in the running. The only problem? Kate and Wills are said to have been ‘arguing and debating’ between the two for years with their preferences split, according to a royal expert. (Picture: Getty Images)
Right now, the future king attends Lambrook School in Berkshire, alongside his royal siblings Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. The school is just a short drive from the family’s new home, Forest Lodge, in Windsor Great Park. Kate once revealed that her children had ‘settled in nicely’ at the school. But for September next year, the two schools said to be in the running are the co-educational Marlborough College in Wiltshire and the all-boys school Eton College in Windsor. Royal fans will know that Princess Catherine attended the former, while Prince William — as well as his brother Harry — were pupils at the latter. (Picture: Getty Images)
In April, royal broadcaster Helena Chard told Fox News that there has been ‘much speculation surrounding Prince George’s next school.’ She said that ‘discussions have been circulating’ for a long time, with the Prince and Princess of Wales reportedly ‘arguing and debating the decision for years.’ Helena then joked she’s surprised that ‘bookies haven’t initiated a bet on which school Prince George will attend next autumn.’ (Picture: Getty Images)
Helena said that while most parents find choosing a good secondary school for their children daunting, the decision is heightened for Kate and William. At the end of the day, Helena said that they just ‘want the best for Prince George’. (Picture: Getty Images)
A royal insider spoke to People in 2023 to explain that, even though they are preparing him for the throne, George having a ‘regular’ existence is paramount. They explained: ‘It’s a massive balancing act. William and Kate are doing the right thing, protecting him so he can have as normal a childhood as possible, but he’s also dipping into duties as a future monarch.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

Why are the Prince and Princess of Wales delaying Prince George’s school announcement?

It’s thought that George’s parents could announce their decision on his next school ‘at the eleventh hour, possibly as late as September 2026,’ Melanie Sanderson, managing editor of The Good Schools Guide, recently told HELLO! magazine. (Picture: Getty Images)

Why are the Prince and Princess of Wales delaying Prince George’s school announcement?

According to Melanie, this is simply because the royals don’t want to cause a fuss. ‘They understand that the school itself, as well as George’s new peer group, will fall under intense scrutiny as soon as it is revealed and will probably want to minimise this, allowing the young royal to transition to his new school with as little fanfare as possible,’ she explained. Which school will Prince George likely attend?

Despite the silence about which school George will attend, Melanie has a sneaking suspicion that Eton — whose other high-profile alumni include George Orwell, Eddie Redmayne, and a string of British Prime Ministers — will come out victorious. ‘I believe Eton is the most likely choice for Prince George. In our most recent review, we describe it as “traditional, radical, expectation-busting and packed with confident boys with nary a hint of entitlement.” To me, this encompasses all the values we are told are important to this generation of royals.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

However, the Princess of Wales is reportedly not so sure about George becoming an Eton boy. A source told OK! magazine that Kate thinks ‘sending him to such a stuffy, upper-crust institution goes against all of their efforts to modernise the monarchy.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

Has Prince George been to visit the schools?

According to the Daily Mail, George has visited several renowned schools in and around London — including the two frontrunners. Prince George reportedly toured Eton College with his father, while he was accompanied by his mother at Marlborough College. (Picture: Getty Images)
