Woman arrested after ‘driving car into crowds of people’ in Manchester

A young woman has been bailed after allegedly driving her car at crowds in Manchester city center early Sunday morning.

Police were called as the chaotic scenes unfolded on and near Deansgate around 5am, with clips of a grey BMW driving erratically having gone viral on social media.

The clips showed the car driving erratically on Deansgate while the area was busy with revellers following festive nights out.

The video also appeared to show the car being driven along the wrong side of the road, with one person initially falling over close by.

The car appeared to then turn around, before being driven through the junction with Bridge Street at speed, and through a red light.

Fighting then erupted between a group in the street, with the vehicle seen quickly turning towards the pavement and crashing into a barrier being used for roadworks.

Several men appeared to try and open the door of the car before it moved off at speed. Amid the chaos, onlookers could be heard saying ‘he’s going to kill someone’ and ‘stand out of the way’.

Screams could also be heard on the footage, originally shared on Instagram, as the drama unfolded and people attempted to dodge the oncoming vehicle on multiple occasions.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a 25-year-old man was treated in hospital following the incident.

In an update issued today, a spokesperson for the force said an 18-year-old woman had been arrested for conspiracy to commit assault in connection with the incident and has since been bailed.

GMP said: ‘Shortly after 5am we were called to reports of a disturbance on South King Street, in Manchester city center.

‘Emergency services attended, and a 25-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries which are not life-threatening.’

The incident comes as a driver accused of mowing down crowds of football fans after Liverpool’s Premier League victory is in court this week.

Paul Doyle, who is being sentenced for the parade attack, could be heard screaming ‘move’, ‘f****** pricks’ and ‘get out the f****** way’ after losing his temper with the route being blocked.

At one point, he can be heard shouting ‘It’s a f****** road’.

The horrifying footage played to the court showed supporters on the bonnet of his seven-seater car, as people, including children, appeared to go under the vehicle.

‘Well over’ 100 people were hit during the seven-minute attack on May 26, which was immediately feared to be a terrorist incident.
