Woman upset about being given ‘wrong’ lottery ticket wins $2,000,000

A woman who got upset over being given the wrong ticket while playing the lottery ended up willing $2million.

Kelly Lindsay, of Carrollton, intended to play her favorite Virginia Lottery scratcher game but instead received a Money Blitz ticket.

Despite the error, Lindsay went to the car park and scratched it.

It revealed a seven-digit figure.

‘And I got over not being happy about it!’ she told lottery officials as she redeemed her prize.

Lindsay opted to take a one-time cash payment of $1.25million before taxes instead of annual payments over 30 years amounting to $2million, according to the Virginia Lottery on Tuesday.

She was pictured smiling widely while holding a jumbo check with her winnings written and a picture of the scratcher ticket on it.

Her odds of winning the top prize were one in 1,142,400 – and it was one of two, meaning there is a second winner who has yet to come forward. The chances of winning any prize in Lindsay’s new favorite game are one in 3.29.

Lindsay purchased the ticket at Race Way Carrollton gas station at 13028 Carrollton Boulevard.

She resides Isle of Wight County, which got over $3.7million for kindergarten to 12th grade education from the state lottery last year. The Virginia Lottery gives all profits to K-12 and last year raised more than $934million, or 10% of the state’s budget for education.

Lindsay is the latest lottery player to get lucky through a weird mistake.

In May 2021, a North Carolina woman also won $2million after unknowingly buying a Powerball ticket past the deadline for the same night’s drawing. However, her $3 Quick Pick ticket wound up being valid for the following drawing, which she won. Her odds of winning were one in 11.6million.

‘It was definitely a shock!’ said Elizabeth Johnson at the time.

‘When I got the message saying that I had won I thought, “Well, I didn’t even play tonight.”’
