A worker has been badly injured after falling from the rear door of an aircraft at Manchester Airport.

Witnesses reported that the engineer dropped 12ft from the back of a Jet2 plane after the mobile stairs had been detached.

Pictures showed emergency service vehicles surrounding the aircraft following the incident, near a set of stairs in Jet2 colors set back from the plane.

Paramedics arrived on the scene at 8.22am on Saturday and placed medical screens around the worker, who was a third-party contractor.

He was taken to hospital where his injuries are thought to be serious but not life-threatening, including leg and arm fractures.

The flight was due to depart for Tenerife when the incident occurred, MEN reported.

The incident involved one of the holiday firm’s two wide-body A330 jets, which are routinely leased by the airline from AirTanker during its busy summer schedule.

Jet2 said an investigation had been launched into the incident.

A spokesperson for the airline said: ‘We are aware of an incident that took place at Manchester Airport this morning (Saturday 11th April) involving an individual from a third-party provider.

‘We are doing our best to provide support to everyone who needs it.’

Manchester Airport said it was unable to comment further as it was a matter for the airline.
