Filipino American pop superstar Bruno Mars scored a new career milestone as his latest album, “The Romantic,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It marks the first time that Mars has launched a full-length album directly at the summit of the chart.
According to data from Luminate, “The Romantic” opened with 186,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the week ending March 5. The strong debut gives Mars his second No. 1 album overall but notably his first chart-topping record in more than a decade.
He previously reached the top of the Billboard 200 with his second studio album, “Unorthodox Jukebox.” That project climbed to No. 1 in March 2013, nearly three months after its release.
The latest chart victory also highlights the gap between his No. 1 albums. His 13-year period between chart leaders is the longest for any living solo male artist since Paul McCartney returned to No. 1 in 2018 with “Egypt Station,“ which came 36 years after his previous chart-topper.
Part of “The Romantic’s” strong opening week was driven by physical sales. The album was released in 10 different vinyl variants, helping it sell 48,000 vinyl copies in its first week.
Before the album arrived, Mars introduced the project through the single “I Just Might,” which went on to become his 10th No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
Meanwhile, several other major releases also debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week, including “The Mountain“ by Gorillaz, “Deadline“ by Blackpink and “Nothing’s About To Happen to Me“ by Mitski.
