Music has always been a source of comfort, healing and self-expression, but for many global K-pop fans, the connection often goes even deeper. For millions who follow BTS, the South Korean supergroup, listening to their music can be life-changing.

A recent study highlights how listening to the group’s music does more than entertain as it can significantly uplift mental health and emotional well-being.

The research, published in the Journal La Sociale, focused on Army Indonesia, a dedicated community of BTS fans in Indonesia. Using a correlational quantitative approach, the 2024 study explored whether the amount of time fans spend listening to BTS affects their psychological well-being (PWB).

According to the findings, listening to BTS is linked with higher feelings of happiness, self-confidence and life satisfaction. Their music, which often carries messages of self-love, resilience and hope, plays a role in motivating fans and guiding them through personal struggles.

One participant explained that whenever they listen to BTS, it feels like the group “truly gets them,” underscoring the emotional connection between artist and listener.

The study quantified this effect, noting that “the duration of listening to BTS music contributes to fans’ psychological well-being by 2.9 percent.” While that figure may sound modest, researchers emphasized its significance in proving that music consumption has measurable effects on mental health.
