One of London’s busiest roundabouts is closed after a car drove into a fountain and flipped over next to an iconic landmark.

Two people were taken to the hospital after the accident, with police tape marking off the scene in Piccadilly Circus, where a heavily damaged car is lying in the middle of a pedestrian area.

Major roads near the crash – Regent Street, Piccadilly Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, and Coventry Street – have been briefly closed.

Piccadilly Circus is one of London’s busiest roundabouts – connecting multiple roads to the West End and attracting upwards of 100,000,000 visitors each year.

One witness took photos and said: ‘Seems to have driven straight into the fountain. Roads leading to and away from it seem to be closed off by tape.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 5.25 am today to reports of a road traffic collision on Piccadilly, W1J.

‘We sent a number of resources, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and members of our hazardous area response team (HART).’

They said one of the two people taken to hospital was taken to a major trauma centre.

Metro have reached out to the Metropolitan Police for a statement.

The fountain into which the car crashed is known as the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, also called Eros.

It was unveiled in 1892, and its iconic silhouette is known as the logo of the Evening Standard newspaper.
