President Donald Trump has signed an order barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports and issued a chilling warning to schools that disobey.

Trump’s executive order titled Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports directs US agencies to withdraw federal funding to any schools that do not comply.

Surrounded by dozens of young female athletes in uniform and women, Trump said: ‘From now on, women’s sports will be only for women.’

‘With this executive order the war on women’s sports is over,’ Trump said from the East Room of the White House on Wednesday afternoon.

The order is part of a ‘sweeping effort to reclaim our culture and our laws’, he said.

It directs the Department of Education to notify schools that letting trans athletes play in women’s sports violates Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex discrimination on campuses. Violating that makes schools ineligible for federal funding.

Trump made the issue central to his 2024 presidential campaign.
