Democrats took the US Senate in a blow to Donald Trump’s Republican party after the midterm results.
Polls are closing across America, with Alaska declaring its results in the midterms that saw Democrats take a narrow lead and control Congress.
Democrats, represented by blue, turned traditional red strongholds like Texas, Kansas, South Carolina and Ohio.
Although the race was about choosing who controls the legislative body Congress, it was also seen as a test for Trump’s popularity.
His critic labelled him a ‘failed lame duck president’ following the bitter results for the Republicans, who have previously controlled the House of Representatives.
Ahead of voting, he urged Americans to ‘pretend I’m on the ballot’ as he staged dozens of rallies across states in the lead up to the midterms.
The US president lashed out online after the turn of events for the Republican party.
He said on Truth Social: ‘I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!’
Potential 2028 presidential challenger Democrat US senator Jon Ossoff won re-election in Georgia, which had been a top Republican target.
The 39-year-old has been a leading critic of the US president and his administration, raising his national profile.
Ossoff told supporters: ‘In sweeping and decisive victories the American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption, and incompetence of the failed lame duck president Donald J Trump.
‘And if, at times these last two years, amidst the ceaseless onslaught of brutality and indecency, you doubted whether our republic would survive, let tonight’s results give you courage that the first light of dawn is on the horizon.’
