Eight convicted murderers fashioned their own riot gear and laid booby traps for guards during a siege that saw them take over part of their maximum security prison for 10 hours.
An elite national response team had to be called to HMP Whitemoor when the inmates – all serving life sentences for murder or conspiracy to murder – refused to go back to their cells after lunch.
Using pieces of furniture as a barricade, they seized control of a spur area of the wing – a self-contained landing or corridor – and kept guards away by spraying oil, shower gel and shampoo on the floor.
They also created makeshift helmets to shield them from Pava spray and pyrotechnic flashes, and wielded broken table legs and kettles as weapons during the mutiny in October 2022.
The killers eventually retreated to the cell of one of the group, Korie Hassan, where they built a further barricade for a last stand.

The crack national response team regained control at around 10pm and the prisoners were restrained.
The eight prisoners were each sentenced to extra jail time at Cambridge Crown Court, with the last sentence passed on February 20.
Those sentenced were:
– Dior Diego Jackson, 27, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was sentenced to one year and nine months in addition to his existing prison term.
– Rick-Champion Champion Musaba, 30, sentenced to four years in addition to his existing sentence after being found guilty of participating in a prison mutiny.
– Nicholas Bridge, 26, sentenced to three years and six months in addition to time already served after being found guilty of participating in a prison mutiny.
– Bradley Blundell, 26, sentenced to one year and six months in addition to his existing sentence after pleading guilty to violent disorder.
– Irwin Constable, 25, sentenced to three years and six months in addition to time served after being found guilty of participating in a prison mutiny.
– Korie Hassan, 33, sentenced to three years and four months in addition to his existing time behind bars after admitting violent disorder.
– Jahliel Rose, 29, sentenced to one year and four months in addition to time served after admitting violent disorder.
– Troy Muschett-Thomas, 25, handed one year and six months in addition to his existing sentence after pleading guilty to violent disorder.
Detective Constable Emma Purser, who investigated the incident, said: ‘The eight prisoners involved in this case offered extreme violence towards staff and took control of the prison’s spur area for about 10 hours.
‘When sentencing, the judge noted that it was only because of the professionalism of the officers who went on to the wing and faced the violence that no-one was seriously hurt.
‘All of the prisoners involved are already serving life sentences for murder or conspiracy to murder, but have now received prison terms of at least 16 months on top of the time they are already serving.’
