Filipina mezzo-soprano Michelle Mariposa took first prize at the 2026 Washington International Competition (WIC) for Voice, held over the weekend in Washington, D.C., and Fairfax, Virginia.

The competition saw young classical singers from all over the world compete for the top prize of $10,000 and several performance opportunities.

The semifinals took place on May 23 at George Washington University’s Phillips Hall, followed by the finals at George Mason University’s Harris Theatre on May 24.

The Filipina artist triumphed over performers from the US, China, South Korea and other countries.

“A well-deserved recognition of Michelle’s artistry. Bravo!,” CCP wrote, highlighting her growing list of accomplishments.

The Washington National Opera member wraps up her current 2025-2026 season with two theater roles at the Glimmerglass Festival.

She returns to the Philippines in August to sing with the Manila Symphony Orchestra.
