LOS ANGELES – Filipino American former Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel made another high-profile appearance as she served as a presenter at the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.
Gabriel took part in the first night of the television industry’s annual awards celebration on Saturday at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles.
The fashion designer and beauty queen was among a lineup of presenters that included Colin Hanks, Julianne Hough, Ariana Madix, Julie Chen Moonves, Wanda Sykes, Sean Evans and other television personalities. Gabriel was among the contestants on “Project Runway” Season 22 before her early elimination in July.
The Saturday ceremony honored artistic and technical achievements in variety, reality and nonfiction television, including categories covering cinematography, costumes, casting, editing and hosting. It was the first of two nights devoted to awards traditionally presented as the Creative Arts Emmys.
The Television Academy has rebranded the two Creative Arts ceremonies as Nights 1 and 2 of the 78th Emmy Awards. The Sept. 5 and 6 ceremonies will be combined into a televised special airing Sept. 12 on FXX, with streaming on Hulu the following day.
The main Emmy telecast will take place Sept. 14 at the same venue, with “Law & Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay hosting. It will air live on NBC and stream on Peacock.
From Miss Universe to ‘Project Runway’
Gabriel, a sustainable fashion designer with Filipino roots, made history in 2022 when she became the first Filipino American to win Miss Universe. She had previously become the first Fil-Am to win Miss USA.
Born to a Filipino father and an American mother, Gabriel has frequently spoken about embracing both sides of her heritage. Her father, Remigio Bonzon “R. Bon” Gabriel, is from Malate, Manila, and immigrated to the United States as a young man.
Gabriel continued her fashion career after her pageant reign. A University of North Texas graduate with a degree in fashion design, she is known for promoting sustainable fashion and incorporating Filipino influences into her work.
She made her reality TV debut this year as one of 22 designers on Season 22 of “Project Runway” before making an early exit from the competition.
