A groundbreaking moment at the 98th Academy Awards was briefly overshadowed by an awkward onstage interruption after the writers of “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters” were cut off before completing their acceptance speeches.

The song, written by EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu-kwak, Lee Yu-han, Hee Dong-am, Jeong Hoon-seo and Teddy Park, won Best Original Song, making history as the first K-pop track to take home the award.

Unexpected interruption

But what was meant to be a celebratory moment quickly turned tense when the group’s acceptance speech was abruptly stopped by the show’s play-off music.

EJAE began addressing the audience and tried to ensure that each of her collaborators would get a chance to speak. However, before the rest of the writers could share their remarks, the orchestra started playing.

Backstage

Despite the onstage cut-off, EJAE made sure her fellow winners still had the opportunity to express their gratitude. Later in the press room backstage, she handed the microphone to her collaborators so they could finish the speeches they had prepared.

Lee Yu-han used the moment to thank those who supported the team throughout the project and described the recognition as “an incredible honor.”

Sonnenblick, who had earlier been seen enthusiastically attempting to continue speaking onstage before the group was ushered off, also delivered his full remarks backstage.

“My family, some of them here tonight — my husband is here tonight,” he said. “Everybody who worked on this movie, all the animators, it was a real collaboration across the board.”

He continued by reflecting on the film’s deeper message and the teamwork behind it. “Part of the movie is about looking at someone that you had been taught to hate and to fear, and starting to trust, maybe love them. A movie is like a village, and we’re lucky to be up here right now, but there’s so many people who have made this what it is.”

Beyond the brief interruption, “Golden” still carved out a unique place in Oscars history. In addition to being the first K-pop winner in the category, it is also the first Best Original Song recipient credited to more than four writers and the first where not every credited songwriter receives an individual Oscar statuette.
