Late Queen’s wish could see Andrew’s name changed again

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor could be set to undergo another name alteration in line with the wishes of the late Queen Elizabeth II as his step back from royal life continues. The ex-Prince and Duke of York was stripped of his titles to become commoner Andrew Mountbatten Windsor — however, decades of royal precedent may now force that name to undergo a tweak. Buckingham Palace is said to be reconsidering how to style Andrew’s name after it was pointed out that the name should contain a hyphen to be written as Mountbatten-Windsor instead. Although minor, it would follow the wishes of his mother’s decree and see Andrew revert to the name he was officially given at birth, when he became the first royal to be given the surname. In 1960, the late Queen established the family surname of Mountbatten-Windsor for descendants who are not princes or princesses, creating a lasting link between her family and that of Philip Mountbatten, her husband. It stated: ‘Now therefore I declare My Will and Pleasure that, while I and My children shall continue to be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor, My descendants other than descendants enjoying the style, title or attribute of Royal Highness and the titular dignity of Prince or Princess and female descendants who marry and their descendants shall bear the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.’ (Picture: REUTERS)

Andrew became the first Royal baby registered with the Mountbatten-Windsor surname and royal insiders now say that Buckingham Palace is reconsidering the style change to honour royal tradition, Daily Mail reports. The hyphenated name appears on royal documents including Princess Anne’s 1973 marriage certificate and the 2019 birth certificate of Harry and Meghan’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Despite Andrew being stripped of his titles and even booted out of his Royal Lodge home (pictured), the ex-Duke is reportedly refusing to ditch his regal lifestyle. It’s claimed the 65-year-old has insisted that a team of staff – including a cook, housekeeper, a secretary/butler and gardeners – join him on his exile to a private property on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

Andrew, whose relationship with the convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein has threatened to tarnish the Royals’ image, will wave goodbye to his 30-room Windsor mansion in the coming weeks. ‘Andrew will certainly go quietly and allow the Royal Family to save face,’ a source told the Daily Mail. ‘But he has conditions and he isn’t prepared to give much ground on them.’ (Picture: AP)

Even Andrew’s cars have been forced to undergo changes as it appears he has given up his personal number plates – AY02 DOY and AY03 DOY — referencing his previous title as Duke of York. He previously used them on his two green Range Rovers (the 02 one) and Bentley (the 03 one), but the plates are no longer in use, according to the DVLA. (Picture: Getty Images)

Andrew has now bought a new automatic Range Rover for £115,000 with the humble number plate KN74EFK. While Andrew’s former plates are not available to buy, a similar plate with registration AY13 DOY is selling for £250, while AY15 DOY can be purchased for £399. (Picture: Getty Images)
