It’s not Christmas if it’s not Mariah Carey.
This year, that sentiment comes with a historic milestone. Carey’s holiday anthem, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” has officially cemented its place in music history as the longest-running No. 1 song of all time on the Billboard Hot 100.
According to Billboard, the track has now spent a total of 20 weeks at No. 1, extending its reign during the 2025 holiday season and surpassing every chart-topper that came before it. The achievement arrives 31 years after the song’s original release in 1994.

The latest milestone pushes the song past two modern juggernauts that previously led the Hot 100 across a single release cycle. These include Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” in 2024 and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” which dominated the charts in 2019.
With this feat, Carey once again rewrites the record books she helped define decades ago.
This is not the first time the pop icon has owned the Hot 100 longevity conversation. In 1995 and 1996, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” ruled the chart for 16 weeks, a record that stood unchallenged for more than 23 years.
That mark was eventually tied by “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber in 2017, before being eventually surpassed by “Old Town Road.” Now, Carey has reclaimed the crown, this time on her own and in the most festive way possible.
Holiday charts competition
Still, the holiday charts are not without competition. Earlier this month, Billboard noted that Wham!’s “Last Christmas” climbed to its highest-ever position on both the Hot 100 and the Holiday 100, peaking at No. 2.
More notably, the publication announced that “Last Christmas” reached No. 1 on the Global 200 chart. This marks the first time since the chart’s launch that a holiday song other than Carey’s has topped the ranking.
