Filipino musical film “Song of the Fireflies,” starring powerhouse vocalists Morissette and Rachel Alejandro, has captured more hearts beyond the Philippines once again as it clinched the Best International Feature Audience Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California.

The announcement was made through the film’s official Instagram page, where the team expressed immense gratitude for the honor.

“Blessings upon blessings! Our team is beyond grateful to @newportbeachfilmfest and those who voted for us for this incredible recognition: Best International Feature Audience Award along with the film ‘Köln 75’ from Germany!” the post read.

The team went on to thank the community that rallied behind them, sharing that word-of-mouth support played a big role in their win.

After overcoming a series of setbacks, including pandemic-related delays, a devastating typhoon in 2021 and financial hurdles, the film finally resumed production in 2023.

“Song of the Fireflies” tells the inspiring story of the world-renowned Loboc Children’s Choir from Bohol, blending a touching coming-of-age narrative with heartfelt musical performances.

Morissette, who plays a passionate music teacher in the film, received multiple awards for her powerful portrayal. Her performance recently earned her the Best Actress award at the 2025 Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) and a Best Actress nomination at the 58th WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.

The film stars Morissette, Krystal Brimner, Noel Comia Jr. and Rachel Alejandro. Its producer, Culturtain Musicat Productions, is the same creative force behind “Ang Larawan.”

Following its Newport Beach victory, the film’s next stop is a “For Your Consideration” special screening in Hollywood on Nov. 13, as it aims for Golden Globes recognition.
