Storm Darragh has made landfall in Britain, leaving a trail of destruction on one of the busiest weekends in the run-up to Christmas.

Millions of people received a ‘stay indoors’ alert as the Met Office issued a rare ‘danger to life’ red wind warning for the early hours of Saturday.

has closed the QEII Bridge at the Dartford Crossing in England’s southeast, and sporting events – including football matches and Aintree Races – have been called off. Winter Wonderland announced an emergency closure on Saturday; it’s not clear if it will reopen today.

Multiple airports have also been affected by the freak weather, with delays and cancellations of flights reported at Heathrow and Manchester Airport.
