Taylor Swift reveals why she avoided dating athletes before Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift has spent much of her career writing about love found, lost and reimagined which were often inspired by relationships with fellow musicians and actors. Dating an athlete, however, was never part of the plan. That is, until Travis Kelce entered the picture.

Talking with her mom, Andrea, the singer admits she never saw herself with someone from the sports world. “I’ve been very non-athlete because I’m not one and I’ve always been like, ‘What would we talk about?’” she shares, explaining how unfamiliar that world felt to her.

The timing of Kelce’s appearance in her life also mattered. Swift reveals that she went through “two breakups on the first half of this tour,” a period that left her emotionally exhausted and ready for change. 

Andrea, noticing the pattern, encouraged her daughter to step outside her comfort zone. Swift recalls her mom’s advice clearly, “You gotta start doing something different,” a simple but pointed push that opened the door to something new.

Andrea then reveals how she quietly played matchmaker. After seeing headlines about Kelce attending Swift’s concert with a friendship bracelet, she decided to investigate. “I’m looking at the headlines and perusing around on the Internet and I see that this guy came to your show and he brought a friendship bracelet and wants to meet you,” Andrea recalls. 

Unsure at first, she called her cousin Robin, her go-to Kansas City Chiefs expert, to ask about Kelce. The response was instant approval. “Oh my God, he is the nicest guy! And he really loves his mom,” Robin told her.

What truly impressed Andrea was the sincerity of Kelce’s gesture. She describes the bracelet as “so earnest” and “the sweetest thing,” especially because it came from Swift’s own fan culture.

When Swift and Kelce finally went on their first date, the learning curve was real. Swift jokes that Kelce had to “explain football” to her, which she amusingly calls “violent chess.” Still, curiosity quickly turned into enthusiasm.

She admits that once she became “obsessed with him,” she also became obsessed with understanding football, calling it “the greatest surprise of my life.”
