Salmonella is a group of bacteria that commonly causes gastroenteritis or food poisoning.

Symptoms, which often develop within hours of contamination, include fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

Most people recover without treatment, but young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems can become seriously ill

Salmonella lives in the gut of many animals, including farm animals and pets, with poultry especially likely to carry it.

Last year it was reported that hospital admissions from salmonella were at an all time high.
