Loyola found solace in dance in her childhood and eventually found herself performing with the renowned Bayanihan Dance Company and becoming a top folk dance choreographer in San Francisco.
But her gender and transition came with a constant trail of abuse, discrimination and estrangement.
The film is a story of healing and “a call for greater empathy toward the transgender community,” Bautista says.
“I want this film to highlight the struggles faced by the transgender community and tell a powerful human story that fosters empathy and respect,” he highlights. “My hope is that it inspires audiences to become allies and helps reduce the tragic challenges faced by the transgender youth.”
“The Road to Sydney” will be screened at Eastwood Mall on Nov. 18 and at Gateway Mall on Nov. 19. The team will also travel to Puerto Princesa for a free public screening at Loyola’s hometown.
