Woman killed in shooting near park in ‘serious incident’

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was shot in a South Wales park on Sunday evening.

Police are still trying to ‘piece together the events’ that unfolded in the town of Talbot Green, about 15 miles west of Cardiff.

Officers were called to the scene of a ‘serious incident’ at around 6.10pm in the Green Park area of the town where they found the injured woman.

The 40-year-old woman had suffered serious injuries. Despite the efforts of the emergency services she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 42-year-old man from Talbot Green has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

He has not been charged and is yet to be named by the force.

Detective chief inspector James Morris said: ‘I understand the concern this will cause the local community.

‘I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working at pace to piece together the events of last night.’

South Wales Police said a number of crime scenes have been set up and road closures are in place.

Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) county borough councillor Sarah Jane Davies urged residents to ‘stay vigilant’and thanked them for cooperation.

She said: ‘I want to address the recent increase in incidents that have caused concern and alarm within our community.

‘We are aware of the seriousness of the situation, and I assure you that steps are being taken to address these issues promptly.

‘I will be arranging a meeting with South Wales Police and RCT to address these matters comprehensively.

‘Please rest assured that the safety and well-being of our community remain our top priority.’
