A new Filipino American series mixing humor, horror and heartfelt storytelling is gaining strong attention online, with “Nurse the Dead” quickly trending worldwide on iWant shortly after its release.
The series is led by “Hello, Love, Again” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” actor Anthony Jennings, who continues his rise as one of the Philippines’ most promising young actors.
In this new project, Jennings joins an ensemble cast that brings to life stories set inside a busy hospital where both emotional struggles and supernatural encounters unfold.

Spotlight on Filipino nurses
At the center of the story is nurse supervisor Noa Reyes, played by Jelynn Malone. Her character has a “third eye,” allowing her to see and talk to spirits within the hospital.
The series explores themes of grief, burnout, resilience and the sacrifices of healthcare workers, especially Filipino nurses who are often underrepresented in mainstream media.
Community leaders have also praised the series for Filipino representation. Daly City Councilmember Juslyn C. Manalo said, “It is long overdue to have more representation on the screen.” She highlighted how Filipino nurses, who play a major role in healthcare systems, are finally being given a spotlight in stories like this.
The show was filmed inside a real hospital in Los Angeles’ Historic Filipinotown. It is directed by Drea Castro and Wesley Villarica, while Mark Labella serves as creator, writer and showrunner. The project is produced by Villarica, Labella and Marvin Aritrangco.
Inquirer columnist lands cameo role
For Inquirer columnist Ruben Nepales, the project also became a personal milestone. He appears briefly in episode 2 in a cameo role alongside his wife Janet, where they play angry relatives of a patient in the hospital.

Nepales described the experience with humor, saying that even with a short scene, he made sure to fully prepare his lines, joking that he kept reminding himself to “internalize, internalize, internalize.” He also referred to it as his lighthearted “series acting debut.”
Nurse the Dead is available to watch now on iWant, with new episodes released weekly. The pilot episode is available for free streaming.
