CARSON, Calif. – “INabel: Living Threads,” a traveling exhibition of indigenous Philippine textiles from the Ilocos Norte region, will open on Friday, May 22, in Carson, Calif.

This one-day exhibition will display the cultural heritage and tradition behind one of the most coveted and rare textiles from the northern region of the Philippines, according to organizers.

The exhibit will highlight the delicate, intricate work of Magdalena Gamayo, dubbed as “master weaver” and “Philippine national treasure.”

‘Pinagmulan’

“This is part of the ongoing ‘Pinagmulan’ textile and fashion exhibition that has been displayed in Los Angeles over the past four years,” said Executive Producer Rosie Chua. “But this is the first time that the distinct INabel fabric will be displayed in Southern California.”

Sponsored

The exhibition is being delivered to Carson by a delegation from the Philippine government, led by Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos.

This event is part of a yearlong celebration marking the 80th anniversary of US-Philippine diplomatic relations.

Cultural heritage

“This is part of a greater effort to draw attention to the cultural heritage of the Philippines through the craftsmanship, design and creativity of these unique fabrics,” Chua said. “I hope that patrons who see this work feel a sense of pride and unity in being Filipino.”

Sponsored

Exhibit producer Ted Benito thanked Philippine Airlines, a major sponsor, for “bringing this stunning work” to Carson, home to a large population of Filipino Americans.

The city, located in Los Angeles County, deeply integrates Filipino culture through annual Philippine independence celebrations and community-led initiatives.

Timeless art

“We are honored to host Governor Araneta-Marcos and her delegation, which includes a few artists and craftsman who will install and oversee the entire display,” Benito said. “This is timeless art, one which carries the stories of generations of Filipinos in its threads.”

“INabel: Living Threads” opens on Friday, May 22, at 10 a.m. at the Carson Community Center, 801 East Carson Street, Carson, with a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony. The exhibit will close at 4 p.m.

Free parking is available onsite.
