Pete Hegseth used a solemn moment on D-Day to claim that Europe is being stormed by ‘different, dangerous ideologies’.
The US Secretary of defense spoke at the Normandy American Cemetery in France to mark the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, when US and Allied troops landed on Normandy’s beaches towards the end of World War II.
‘Sadly, today, different European beaches are stormed by different dangerous ideologies. [On] beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria, boats and men arrive,’ he said.
‘When will European capitals do something about that invasion? Is it too late? I pray not.’
Hegseth did not use the word immigration, but his remarks echoed broader criticism from the Trump administration over Europe’s migration policies, as well as what US officials have described as censorship of nationalist and far-right voices.
In December, the US’s national security strategy warned that Europe faced the ‘prospect of civilisational erasure’.
Hegseth’s comments come after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s office condemned US Vice President JD Vance for blaming the murder of Henry Nowak on immigration.
Henry, an 18-year-old student, was stabbed to death in Southampton.
The Trump administration waded into the subsequent outcry, echoing claims made by the likes of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage that the case showed a ‘two-tiered policing’ system exists in the UK.
A Downing Street spokesperson said: ‘The Nowak family are grieving after Henry’s horrific murder.
‘They have said they do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension. We should be respecting their wishes.
‘Our politics should bring people together even in the most terrible of circumstances. That is who we are as a country.’
Vance’s words came after a statement from the US State Department claimed Henry’s death was a product of both ‘ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing’.
The US State Department said: ‘Ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing are glaring symptoms of civilisational decline.’
