At a sombre event honouring Americans who were killed by ‘illegal aliens’, Donald Trump suggested he ‘might not have long left’.
At the event honouring ‘Angel Families’ on the second anniversary of Laken Riley’s murder, Trump spoke about Americans who had lost loved ones and spoke against illegal immigration.
Speaking at the podium, Trump said: ‘I don’t know how long I’ll be around. I’ve got a lot of people gunning for me, don’t I?
‘But I will not forget them. I’m not gonna forget them,’ he added, referencing the Americans who were killed.
The White House said of the event: ‘President Trump signed a Proclamation designating February 22 as National Angel Family Day — a day of remembrance for victims and their grieving loved ones devastated by the consequences of open border policies.’
February 22, 2024, was when Georgia nursing student Laken Riley was murdered by Jose Ibarra, from Venezuela.
Riley was going for a run when she was killed, and Ibarra was convicted and given a life sentence without parole.
The Trump Administration has referenced Riley’s murder as showing a need for stricter border security.
Riley’s mother, Allyson Phillips, said at the event: ‘If you’ve lived that nightmare that we have lived, you understand the importance of the job that he is doing in securing our nation and fighting for our families — because this could be any family.’
Trump’s comments about people ‘gunning for him’ are likely in reference to the chaos at Mar-a-Lago this weekend, when police shot a gunman who entered the resort.
Austin Tucker Martin was the gunman killed by the Secret Service at the president’s Florida retreat after he drove through the north gate of the resort.
Two agents were sent to locate the intruder, 21, ‘carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can’. When confronted, they told him to drop the weapon.
According to the Secret Service, Martin raised his shotgun into a shooting position before the agents opened fire, killing him at 1.30am on Sunday.
The break-in at Trump’s Florida home was a few miles from his West Palm Beach golf club, where a man tried to assassinate Trump while he played golf during the 2024 election.
A Secret Service agent spotted that man, Ryan Routh, aiming a rifle through the shrubbery before Trump came into view. Officials said Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire and caused Routh to drop his weapon. Routh was found guilty last year and sentenced this month to life in prison.
That incident came months after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
That gunman had fired eight shots, with one bullet grazing Trump’s ear, before being shot by a Secret Service counter sniper.
