People living in a street where a suspected crack den was raided by police last week have revealed they see ‘blatant’ drug dealing and people ‘off their heads’ every day.

Police arrested two people on suspicion of dealing the crack cocaine after they carried out a warrant at a property in George Street, Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset last Wednesday.

Since the news emerged, Metro has spoken to residents living in George Street, located less than a two minute walk from Christ Church C of E Primary school, about drug use and anti-social behavior in the area.

One resident, who did not wish to be identified, shared CCTV clips of people walking down an alleyway in the street which they say is frequented by drug dealers and users. It is a dead end and leads to a garage, they explained.

They said: ‘The brashness of the drug taking is shocking. They are sitting on kerbs out of their heads.

‘A couple of weeks ago a bloke, who was completely off his head, sat down in the street for 15 minutes before he sobered up enough to carry on walking.

‘There are kids playing on the street. We really care about these kids and they’re on the street running around, playing and doing the normal stuff that kids do.

‘They are adorable and very polite and we are very annoyed as a community that they have all this drug taking and dealing going on around them.

‘Some of the people on the street live alone and aren’t steady on their feet.

‘Seeing these dodgy people and all the anti-social behavior around sets their minds racing.’

One resident said they saw a group of women ‘off their heads’ on drugs in the street on New Year’s Eve.

When they left, the resident saw they’d left a glass pipe, which they believed was being used to smoke crack cocaine. They later dropped it off at a police donation bin in the North Somerset town.

‘These girls were all over the shop,’ they said.

‘One of them had tripped and I saw her pipe on the floor. I picked it up and it sent a shock wave, which felt like an electric shock, up my arm.

‘It was probably whatever the chemical was inside touching my skin.’

It is understood the road is home to two dry houses – where recovering addicts go as part of their rehabilitation.

There are alleyways that run behind the houses and residents said these are used for drugs deals, although sometimes ‘blatant’ ones takes place in the road.

The residents said they are in close contact with officers from Avon and Somerset Police as well the North Somerset Council and the local labor MP Dan Aldridge.

They said all three are ‘brilliant’ in responding, however we ‘feel that we have to report it several times a year before they have the time and the resources to come round and tackle it’.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said two people, a man and a woman, were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine last Wednesday.

Sergeant Joe Pitman said: ‘We were able to apply for a Misuse of Drugs Act warrant following information shared with us by the local community.

‘I am extremely grateful to those people who have come forward.

‘Without the support of the community, we would not have been able to take such positive action.

‘We will continue to relentlessly pursue and disrupt those that push Class A drugs and engage in persistent and harmful anti-social behavior within the town.’

Metro has contacted North Somerset Council and Mr Aldridge for comment.
